This list is bit late for May the 4th, but lets say you didn’t get your fill of a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: Jedi Survivor upon completion. Maybe some technical issues got in your way? Maybe Jedi just aren’t your thing-you’re much more of a blasters kind of guy. Whatever your case, I’m here to help you out. There’s a lot of Star Wars games out there. Some of them are great, while others are… not. No need to deal with those though; with this handy list, you’ll be able to experience the best games from all kinds of genres and settings within the Star Wars universe.
Jedi: Fallen Order
Obvious one here; if you haven’t played the precursor to Survivor, than you probably should! If you haven’t played either, Fallen Order is a great jumping off point not just for the series but for Star Wars games in general, really. Its a great game set in a pretty unique time period for the setting, and has a surprisingly good story, especially for an introduction to Cal Kestis and his band of misfits. A decent melee fighting game mixed in with a classic feeling Star Wars adventure is a winning formula, and Fallen Order pulls it off in great fashion to make one of the better games to come out in the modern Star Wars era.
Knights of the Old Republic
This one is a no brainer-KOTOR is widely regarded as not only the best Star Wars game ever, but also one of the best games ever, period. While the combat and visuals are a bit dated by today’s standards, the writing in is nothing short of immaculate. You really do get the best from all sides of the Star Wars spectrum here. You have your classic Jedi vs Sith, yes, but you also have a myriad of unique and compelling characters to interact with, from an honorable Mandalorian to a towering Wookiee in your party, each with their own unique questlines and motivations, all wrapped up in one of the most interesting time periods in the setting. Not even mentioning the incredible villain and an insane plot twist that nobody ever sees coming-trust me, I’ve tested it. As a bonus, KOTOR II: The Sith Lords is also incredible and well worth your time!
It also has the best character in any Star Wars story: HK-47. You’re free to disagree, just know that you’re wrong.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
No, this isn’t a joke; The Skywalker Saga is legitimately one of the best Star Wars games you can buy on modern platforms. I’ve always had a soft spot for LEGO games, growing up on not only the LEGO Star Wars and Indiana Jones games, but also as an avid collector. This one is no exception. Adapting all 9 main entries and converting them into a classic LEGO game experience with all the charm, humor and basic gameplay that entails. Adapting all 9 movies means that there’s also a starship-load of content to unlock–a whopping 384 characters are up for grabs here, not even including collectibles and starships!
Star Wars Battlefront II (Classic)
“What I remember about the fall of the Republic is… is how quiet it was.”
Its a known fact that being the bad guy is objectively cool, and this was really one of the first Star Wars games to show us the point of view of the stormtroopers we mindlessly mow down in every other Star Wars game, the infamous 501st Legion, in fact. Perhaps one of the most influential Star Wars games, the classic version of Battlefront II was very formative to many young kids growing up in the 2000s, and parts of it still hold up to this day. The single-player campaign is still pretty fun and very replayable, with the space battles being a big highlight. If you just want multiplayer, than the new version of Battlefront II is probably better for you, but if you’re looking for a great combined arms single player shooter, Battlefront II classic is your move.
Star Wars: Squadrons
One of the most slept on games I have ever played, Squadrons is easily the best flight game in Star Wars’ repertoire. Boasting a surprisingly good campaign, great visuals and some great flight mechanics, this game really takes it to the next level with a HOTAS setup. Doubly so if you have VR. There’s not many games that have given me the same experience of twisting and turning as I dodge gun emplacements while looking over my shoulder to see the TIE Fighter chasing me. Its a great time, and the only drawback is that it was unfortunately very undermarketed and, subsequently, undersold. If you can get some friends together though for some private matches, you’re in for a great time.
Republic Commando
“An elegant weapon for a more civilized time, eh? Well guess what. Times have changed.”
Republic Commando is, without a doubt, my favorite Star Wars game. A gritty reimagining of the Clone Wars era, Republic Commando dares to ask the question “what if Star Wars was also Rainbow 6?” Following the famed Republic Commando unit Delta Squad throughout the early stages of the Clone Wars is a great FPS romp, and its still a really unique take on the Star Wars universe today. Moving away from the classic formula of Jedi vs Sith and going for a darker, grittier “operator” tone was perfect for this style of squad-shooter, and commanding Delta Squad while taking down enemies is still really satisfying to this day. If you love FPS games like the older Call of Duty or Rainbow 6 titles and can’t seem to find much of that in the Star Wars setting, then Republic Commando is your dream come true.
Disney… please give me Imperial Commando. I’ll do anything. I’ll say anything. Just… give it a chance.
These are just a few of my favorite games set in a galaxy far, far away; if you have our favorites, let us know! And while you’re here, make sure to check out my review on Star Wars- Jedi: Survivor while you’re here!
